Abbotsford Wharf, a stopping place for the Parramatta Rivercat ferry service, is located at the end of Great North Road. Abbotsford took its name from Abbotsford House. Abbotsford House is a heritage-listed house with views of Abbotsford Bay, in the inner west suburb of Abbotsford. It was built by a physician, philanthropist, and politician Sir Arthur Renwick in 1878 in the Victorian architectural style. One of the suburb’s claims to fame is the glorious Abbotsford House, one of the few surviving 19th-century Victorian mansions in the City of Canada Bay. The suburb took its name from this house which was named after Abbotsford in the United Kingdom, the residence of historical novelist and poet, Sir Walter Scott. In 1920 it became the site of a Nestlé chocolate factory, with the house used initially for chocolate production and later as their administrative offices. The factory was closed in 1991 and the estate was redeveloped with medium-density residential apartments known as Abbotsford Cove while preserving the historic house. Abbotsford is home to about 5500 people. Only 10km from Sydney’s CBD maxi taxi services, Abbotsford sits on the peninsula between Abbotsford Bay and Hen and Chicken Bay on the Parramatta River. According to the 2016 Census, nearly 5500 residents comprised 64% of people who were born in Australia. Abbotsford Presbyterian is a Bible-believing church seeking to grow healthy disciples of Jesus. At our church meetings, we do things you might expect if you’ve been to church before. We listen to God’s word from the bible. We hear a bible talk that helps us think about how God’s word asks us to respond. We speak to God in prayer. We sing songs that praise God and affirm what we believe about him. Between 1918 and 1962, Abbotsford was home to Nestle’s confectionery factory. The factory was linked to the Parramatta River by a narrow-gauge railway line that carried coal from a bunker on the harbor end of the Abbotsford wharf to the boiler house at the chocolate factory in Melrose Crescent.
