Balgowlah was named in 1832 after an Aboriginal word meaning north harbor about its position on Port Jackson. The area was not developed until the 1960s. Situated on a ridge up to 80 meters above North Harbour and Middle Harbour, some houses have panoramic views of the harbor, Eastern Suburbs, and Spit Bridge. The suburb features remnant Sydney Harbour bushland, contained in the National Park around Dobroyd Head and Grotto Point. Tania Park at the eastern fringe offers relaxed recreation and one can watch the Manly ferry cut its way to Circular Quay. Balgowlah Heights is in the federal electorate of Warringah, the state electorate of Manly, and is within the local council area of Manly. It used to be regarded as a safe Liberal seat, however, in the 2019 election, the seat was won by Independent, Zali Steggall. According to the 2016 census of Population, there were 3,342 residents in Balgowlah Heights. 67.3% of people were born in Australia. The next most common country of birth was England at 10.7%. 87.0% of people only spoke English at home. The most common responses for religious affiliation were No Religion 32.8%, Catholic 24.2%, and Anglican 24.2%. Balgowlah’s main commercial area is located on Condamine Street and Sydney Road. Major businesses in Balgowlah are Harvey Norman and Bunnings Warehouse. Stockland Balgowlah is a shopping center located on Condamine Street. The center opened on 15 July 2009. Its main majors are Coles, Fitness First, and 62 other retailers. Stockland Balgowlah is built on the site of the historic Totem Centre, which opened in 1959. The name Totem was based on the North American model. The center had 33 shops, a bowling alley, and a huge Woolworths store. In 2007 the Totem Centre was demolished, the center was run down at the time of its demolition and the Totem name was not continued. However, the center is still colloquially referred to as “the Totem” or the “Totem Shopping Centre” in the area. The nearest major shopping center in Westfield Warringah Mall, located 2 kilometers north of the suburb. There are a few smaller shopping areas in Balgowlah, some of them the remnants of the traditional “corner shop” prior to the 1960s.
